Some people regard sleep as one of the pleasures of life and get as
much sleep as they can. Others go a step further and claim that sleep
is the natural state for man and keeping awake is unnatural. But
some others, and the number of such people has increased in the
twentieth century. They regard it as a waste of time. These people
complain that even twenty-four hours of the day would not be enough for all the things they have to do. They are worried by the thought that at least one-third of their lives is wasted in sleep. The majority of people still believe that a good night’s rest is the best tonic, and it is in sleep that a body recovers its health. But a few believe that sleep dulls both mind and body making them unfit for action. However, there is no scientific proof for this. In 1933, a young man convinced that sleeping was a habit which could be given up. He stayed awake when scientists observed his behaviour. They found that after a week his mind was so affected by sleeplessness that the experiment had to be stopped. If he had continued, he might have died. Although we have no proof in this case, we know that animals deprived of sleep die, and also that in the olden days sleep-deprivation was a method of carrying out the death penalty.

10. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :
In nature, animals are not influencd by media campaigns and they
trust their own instincts. Nature has given each animal the power to
monitor its own body and maintain normal health. As an example, salt is an essential element required by all animals. Wild animals in the forest ( like rhinoceros, elephants or deer ), try to find a place where salt is present in the soil. They regularly lick the soil to get the exact amount of salt their bodies need. They eat only the required amount of food and never suffer obesity as we humans often do. They monitor their body needs by instinct and eat no more than is required. All carnivorous animals eat grass whenever they have diarrhoea or other stomach problems due to indigestion. And, they normally manage to maintain good physical health. We human beings seem to have lost the ability to monitor our own bodies in order to maintain health. We refuse to understand our own body signals and tend, instead to follow the advice of doctors or the media. Sometimes, overzealous parents force infants and small children to eat because it is feeding time — not because they are hungry.
